Best cable for installations in a noisy environment is:
Braided copper shielded twisted pair cable 24AWG - BELDEN part number 9841
Link all the RS485 wire shields together and connect it at only the RS232/RS485 interface end (not at the controller end) and use a very good earth at the interface.
The maximum distance of the RS485 bus: 1200 meters
If the bus needs to run over a long distance (approx. 400m or more), consider installing a 120Ohm resistor as a terminator at the last (most distant) controller.
