On the System & SQL tab of the Options screen, the SQL Server Options drop-down list provides several management options for the system database journal, including

  • Backup Database,
  • Backup Journal,
  • Restore Database,
  • Restore Journal.

Please note that the Restore Database and Restore Journal actions are restricted to the GuardPoint10 Server installation where the SQL Server is installed on the same machine as the GuardPoint10 Server installation. Nonetheless, it is possible to backup a database or journal to a remote SQL Server.

Backup a system database or journal to a Backup folder

To backup a system database or journal to the SQL Server's Backup folder, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Options screen in the Setup Task group.
  2. Select the System & SQL tab.
  3. Click on SQL Server Options at the top of the tab to display a drop-down list.
  4. Choose either Backup Database or Backup Journal.
  5. If you selected Backup Database, the current system database will be backed up in the SQL Server's Backup folder with a file name following this convention: AC8_<suffix><date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK.
  6. If you selected Backup Journal, the current journal will be backed up in the SQL Server's Backup folder with a file name following this convention: AC8Journal_<suffix><date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK.

Restore system database or journal from a Backup folder

To restore a system database or journal from the SQL Server's Backup folder, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Options screen in the Setup Task group.
  2. Select the System & SQL tab.
  3. Click on SQL Server Options at the top of the tab to display a drop-down list.
  4. Choose either Restore Database or Restore Journal.
  5. If you selected Restore Database, a File Explorer window will open displaying the content of the SQL Server's Backup folder. Select the database to be restored and click Open. The database restore process will begin.
  6. The database restore process will automatically close or stop all opened GuardPoint10 instances (Server and Workstation) and restart the GuardPoint10 services.
  7. Use the backup naming conventions to determine which file to restore. The naming convention for system database backups is: AC8_<suffix><date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK
  8. If you selected Restore Journal, a File Explorer window will open displaying the content of the SQL Server's Backup folder. Select the journal to be restored and click Open. The journal restore process will begin.
  9. The journal restore process will automatically close all opened GuardPoint10 instances (Server and Workstation) and restart the GuardPoint10 services.
  10. Use the backup naming conventions to determine which file to restore. The naming convention for journal backups is: AC8Journal_<suffix><date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK
  11. Note that option settings are stored in the database and will be restored along with other system data.
  12. After restoring a database, it is recommended to initialize controllers to resolve any residual data issues that may be in a controller's memory from before the restore operation.
  13. Part of the restore process includes an automatic backup of the current journal or system database. The automatic backup will have the following naming convention: AC8Journal_<suffix>BeforeRestore<date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK or AC8_<suffix>BeforeRestore<date of backup> <time of backup>.BAK.

Automatically archive the GuardPoint10 journal

To enable automatic archiving for the current journal, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Setup Task group and select Options. This will open the Options screen.
  2. Navigate to the System & SQL tab.
  3. Set Archive Journal to Yes to enable the related fields.
  4. In the For Events Older Than (in Days) field, enter the number of days that an entry must be older than to be included in the archive.
  5. In the Max Rows per Archive (in Millions) field, specify the maximum number of rows allowed per archive. When this limit is reached, a new archive will be automatically created.
  6. Click Save to save the changes.
  7. Go to the Options > General tab and set Restart Services every night to Yes, then specify a restart time.
  8. Click Save again.
  9. When the GPPServer service is restarted during the system maintenance process, the automatic archive process for the journal will start. The system maintenance process time can be set in the Options > General screen. The name of the archived journal will include a timestamp indicating the date and time the archive was created (YYYYMMDDHHMM).

To view an archived journal, refer to the Changing Event History Report Table View instructions.
